RECENT EVENT…

Evening Trolleybus Tour

The trolleybus tour went ahead on April 1st, as proposed in the last Running Sheet, thanks to our member Gerard Cooper of GO Wellington.  Gerard selected new trolleybus No. 356 (ETK202) because of its good external condition.  It was available to us because the fare machine was not working, thereby making it unsuitable for public service.  Five members and a prospective member, Dave, and Gerard, enjoyed a tour that made the most of Daylight Saving’s last week on a fine evening.  Our first journey was to Kingston and was in sunlight.  The new trolley showed that it is undaunted by the hills on this route, albeit with a light load.  However, the additional length is a challenge in some places.

After returning to Lambton Terminal to turn round we headed along the Golden Mile on our way east to pass through the bus tunnel and around the Hataitai circuit.  Darkness had fallen by the time we reached Strathmore where we stopped for fish & chips that were devoured at the Seatoun Terminus.  Gerard provided an interesting explanation of the controls and features of the new trolleybus. Even though the new trolleybuses could be ridden on any day, the passengers enjoyed the opportunities that only a special trip like this could provide.I would like to give special thanks to Gerard Cooper for facilitating the tour and taking time out to drive the trolleybus for us.  Also, thanks are due to Bruce Kenyon of GO Wellington for sanctioning the trip.

FORTHCOMING EVENT…

Rendall’s Rambles Magic Light Show

Friday, 8th May 2009 at 7-30 pm  Our Chairman, Peter Rendall, made his first trip to Europe in December where he was able to see many buses and trams in their homeland.  Peter will share with us a slide show of the photographs he took of buses and other transport modes in several European countries as well those he saw in Hong Kong and San Francisco en route.  This promises to be an interesting evening.

Peter will kindly be hosting this show at his home and will be providing a light supper.  BYOG.  Please notify Peter if you will be attending, preferably by e-mail to obnz@paradise.net.nz or otherwise by phone on 970 1405.

Peter’s address is 5 Bidwill Street, Mount Cook, Wellington, which is near the top end of Taranaki Street (on route 11).
